We estimated above-ground biomass and carbon stock for public parks in Bhubaneswar, a rapidly urbanising city in Odisha whose green status is declining. Carbon stock ranged from 13.48 megagrams over an area of 0.22 hectares at SV Park to 479.49 megagrams over 8.91 hectares at BP Park, with average biomass of 32.85 megagrams per hectare across the surveyed parks. Our survey documented 48 tree species belonging to 44 genera and 22 families. The central structural finding was that most surveyed parks lack trees in the sapling class, and therefore that regeneration potential is lacking. We attribute this to the plantation of various tree species in different planting years, which in practice leaves age cohorts that do not touch each other, so a park can look green from the road while nothing behind it is replacing anything.
